It is very common to get locked out of one’s bedroom accidentally. You won’t have a problem if you have the key to the lock with you, but the situation will get worse if you don’t have access to the key. You can call a locksmith to help you out, but you can always use some effective DIY methods to open your locked bedroom door without its key.
Methods to Open a Locked Bedroom Door
Here are some of these methods. Let’s have a look at them.
1- The Use of Credit Cards
The easiest way of opening your bedroom lock is by using a credit card. Many people don’t consider this a fine method. However, it is very effective if you have a laminated card that you don’t use anymore. But you must keep in mind that credit cards aren’t suitable for deadbolt locks. Here is how you can open a spring lock with a laminated card.
- Start by inserting the card in between the door and the frame.
- After that press it against the door frame and fold it again.
- This will automatically push the lock back in the door and eventually open it.
In some cases, you might not find enough space between the lock and the frame. In this scenario, insert the card forcefully between the door and the frame above the lock. After that, tilt the card facing the frame and quickly slide it down. In this case, it is preferred to use a slightly thicker card.
A screwdriver is available in almost every house and often comes in handy. To open a bedroom lock without a key, simply insert a thin screwdriver directly in the keyhole of the door handle. Then using another screwdriver, start twisting the lock until it opens. However, insert a flat-headed screwdriver between the bolt and frame if there is a spring lock. Try pushing the lock back at the door by moving the screwdriver back and forth. In this way, you can easily open the lock.
3- Lock Picking Methods
Lock picking is perhaps one of the trickiest methods for opening a bedroom door lock without a key. This method also requires an Allen key which isn’t available in every house. But if you have it, but the shorter end inside the bottom edge of the keyhole and apply a little pressure to the lock by turning it towards the direction of the key and then holding it firmly. You can then start picking the lock with straightened paper clips. It can be done in two ways.
- If you decide to use the scrubbing approach, carefully put the paper clip in the bottom of the keyhole. Pull the clamp back and then up. Keep on repeating this technique, thereby adopting a circular motion. Make sure that you constantly increase the pressure with the Allen key. After a while, you will see the locking movement. If this method doesn’t work, you can use the second option.
- If you choose this method, apply a little pressure on the Allen key and push the paper key inwards. When you feel that the paper clip has touched the pin, grab the curve of the pin and lift it until it clicks. This indicates that the pin is in place. Keep repeating this method until the lock opens.
4- Using a Fine Wire or a Thin Rod
If your bedroom door has a privacy knob that works by pressing a button on the handle, you can use a fine wire or a thin rod to open it. Start by finding a small hole in the door handle. Then use a hammer to insert a paper clip, a fine wire, or a thin rod in it. Try pushing it inside as much as possible, and then turn it in the other direction. The lock will open by doing this until it engages in the groove.
5- Butter Knife
A knife is also an amazing option to unlock the blocked or locked bedroom doors. However, using a knife can be dangerous; therefore, certain precautions are necessary to avoid injuries. It is recommended to use a butter knife instead of a sharp knife to prevent accidents. It is not sharp but thick enough to resist any kind of pressure.
6- The Removal of Hinges
Insert a flat-blade screwdriver between the bottom pins and upper pins. Then tap the screwdriver handle down with a hammer. Remove upper pins when they are loose enough. However, not all the hinges work in the same way, and a common example of that is the cabinet hinges. Continue this method until the remaining hinges are removed. If this method takes too long, knock out the hinges using Philip’s screwdriver.
7- Use a Hammer to Break the Lock
Breaking the lock is the method that you should use when nothing else seems to work. However, many people still suggest calling a professional locksmith to open the bedroom lock without the key. If something important is inside the bedroom and you need it urgently, take out the hammer and break the doorknob. Some people also prefer using a clutch instead of a hammer because it also works perfectly to break a lock.
8- Drilling the Lock
Another last option to open a locked door is to drill through the keyhole. Start by drilling above the keyhole, and then before drilling further, apply some oil on it. After that, open the internal cylinder of the lock with the help of a screwdriver. Once you are done, the lock will be damaged, but your door will remain unharmed.
9- Lubricating the Keyhole
Lubricating the keyhole is another effective hack to open the locked doors. Spray some oil on the keyhole. You can then try using any thin key of the house to open the lock. If it doesn’t work, try lubricating a similar-looking key.
All the above methods are known for effectively opening a locked bedroom door if you have lost the key. Pick the one that best suits your needs and follow the steps properly to ensure a 100% success rate.
